Last night’s film was another that’s been on my “films I should’ve seen by now but haven’t” list.
Gattaca (1997)
It’s a sci-fi/thriller starring Ethan Hawke (Training Day), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) among others.
Here’s what it’s about:
In a future where genetically superior human beings can go further in life and even travel to the stars, a genetically inferior man (Hawke) assumes the identity of a superior one (Law) in order to achieve his goal of travelling to the stars.
Just when he’s finally scheduled for a space launch his program director is murdered and he (or rather his real self) becomes the prime suspect in the case.
The first thing I noticed watching this film is how young everyone looks, especially Ethan Hawke (it is 23 years old now I guess), I really enjoyed it though.
It’s very stylish and uses different coloured filters to give certain scenes a yellow tint.
Also, while it’s set in the future, everything has a kind of 60s feel about it. I really liked that and it makes the film unique.
It’s clever, compelling and as the story goes on and builds in tension, it keeps you guessing as to whether he’ll be able to outsmart everyone or whether he’ll get caught out at the last minute.
All in all a decent sci-fi movie with an original story and good performances. 👍
