Introducing a new feature:
I think it's fair to say that the last ten or so years of cinema has been mostly dominated by superhero movies and reboot/remakes.
Over the coming weeks I’m going to look at a few of the remakes released in recent years and try to ascertain which are good, which are bad and which (if any) are actually better than the original.
Today we’re looking at the 2012 remake of Total Recall (1990).
First off, the original is a classic (as are most of the films I plan to look at as part of this feature). Total Recall is one of Arnie's "big hits" in a long line of successful movies he made during his golden years. Any mention of a remake would surely make the blood drain from the face of any self respecting Total Recall fan..?
Regardless of whatever anyone else thinks of it though, I actually quite liked this film.
Unlike some remakes it included a lot of stuff from the original but changed enough to make it its own film.
I think the problem with remakes is that if they change too much, people complain and if they don’t change enough, people...complain.
Overall verdict: This remake is a fairly decent film in its own right but you still can’t beat the original Schwarzenegger classic.
Film Fact: The film is loosely based on the short story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dicks (the guy that wrote the novel that Blade Runner is based on).
