The Gentlemen (2019)

I’m not a big fan of British films. There, I said it.

However, much like a lot of films from genres I don’t naturally lean towards, when I do inevitable watch one I usually enjoy it.

It’s not that I don’t think British films are good - some are very good, I just like movies for the escapism they provide and I find that a lot of British films either tend to be period dramas (which I’m also not a fan of), or they’re a bit too gritty and “real life” for my taste. They’re also often crime/gangster related (another genre I’m not big on).

I guess I prefer Hollywood movies because the settings are totally different to what I see when I look out of my window.

Having said all that, last night on the recommendation of someone on the Facebook page I watched the latest Guy Ritchie film:

The Gentlemen (2019).

I have to admit it took a little while to grab me but I ended up loving it!

If you haven’t seen it it stars Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar), Hugh Grant (Love Actually), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) among many others.

Here’s what it’s about courtesy of IMDb:

“Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) is an American expatriate who became rich by building a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he's looking to cash out of the business, it soon triggers an array of plots and schemes, including bribery and blackmail from shady characters who want to steal his domain.”

First off, I have to say Hugh Grant is brilliant in this film! Forget the floppy haired, perfect English accent, romcom version of Hugh Grant that you’re familiar with, this is Hugh Grant as you’ve never seen him before and he’s excellent!

A special mention has to go to Colin Farrell too who’s also superb and hilarious as Coach.

The story is really clever but easy enough to follow and as you’d expect from a Guy Ritchie film the humour is quality.

Something I’m loving about running this site and the Facebook page is all the chats I have with you guys in the comments and all of the new films I’m watching on your recommendations. I’ve noticed I’m being a little more open minded about watching films I might not have before, so thanks for that.

I’ve got quite a bit to watch next week so stand by for posts....

Have a great weekend!
