The Shape of Water (2017)

It makes me laugh when people go to see a film like Open Water (2003) and complain about how, “It was just two people floating in the sea for the whole film”. Well yeah, it’s about two people who get left behind by a dive boat...

With this movie I quite often hear, “It was weird” and I think, “Well of course it’s weird, it’s a Guillermo del Torro film and it’s about a woman who falls in love with (essentially) the creature from the black lagoon.”

Personally I love this film.

If you haven’t seen it, it stars Sally Hawkins (Paddington), Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Richard Jenkins (Jack Reacher).

Here’s what it’s about according to IMDb:

“At a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a mute janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity.”

Sure, it’s an unusual story (or “weird”) but it’s wonderfully told, brilliantly acted, has Guillermo del Torro’s trademark unique style and if all that wasn’t enough, it just looks beautiful!

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you give it a go.

If you have seen it? What do you think?

Here’s the trailer.👇
